Types Of Wood We Build With

Choosing the right type of wood to use for your ranch fence is an important decision. The type of wood you select will determine how much time and money you’ll have to put into long-term maintenance, as well as the lifespan of your fence. We primarily build our ranch fences from Western Red Cedar, but we do provide pressure-treated pine as a more budget-friendly option.

Western Red Cedar

  • Durability: Cedar is more durable and rot-resistant than pine, so it is more likely to last longer. You can expect to get 30 years from a cedar fence.
  • Strength: Cedar is a stronger and more stable wood than pine, so it is less likely to warp or twist over time.
  • Insect resistant: Cedar is naturally resistant to insects, while pine is more prone to insect damage.
  • Appearance: Cedar has a more attractive appearance than pine, with a warm, reddish-brown color and a fine, straight grain. Pine has a more yellowish color and a coarser, more uneven grain.
  • Cost: Cedar is generally more expensive than pine, due to its higher quality and durability.

Pressure Treated Pine

  • Cost: Pine is generally less expensive than cedar, so it can be a more budget-friendly option for a wood fence.
  • Maintenance: Compared to Cedar, pine will require more frequent staining to protect the wood from warping and rotting away.
  • Appearance: Pine can still look very high quality with the right stain.
  • Durability: You can expect to get 20 years from a pine fence.
